Ukrainian AI-enhanced FPV kamikaze drones with computer vision guidance for autonomous terminal homing. Produced in massive quantities using commercial components and AI seeker software.
Ukrainian FPV drones evolved rapidly from hobby aircraft into weapons of war, with a cottage industry of developers and manufacturers creating AI-enhanced guidance packages using open-source computer vision software running on commercial processors. The AI targeting software used on these drones can autonomously lock onto specific vehicle types including tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and artillery systems with sufficient accuracy for terminal guidance in the final 50 to 100 meters of flight. Ukraine's production and deployment rates for these AI-guided systems have reached tens of thousands per month, creating a volume of autonomous weapons engagement never before seen in warfare.
Mass deployment against Russian armor and troops 2023–present; AI target acquisition reduces pilot workload
No single company dominates Ukraine's FPV drone production, which relies on hundreds of small Ukrainian manufacturers. Quantum Systems (private) and Skydio (private) are Western analogs that may benefit from technology transfer.
