AI system that identifies suspected Hamas militants and recommends them as strike targets by analyzing mass surveillance data. Reportedly generated kill lists for Israeli strikes in Gaza.
The Lavender system reportedly assigned risk scores to over 37,000 Palestinian men of fighting age by analyzing mobile phone associations, social media activity, and movement patterns against known Hamas organizational structures. Former IDF intelligence officers have stated that human operators were given as little as 20 seconds to approve or reject each AI-generated target recommendation, effectively delegating lethal decisions to the algorithm. The system's existence was revealed in April 2024 by Israeli media outlet +972 Magazine following interviews with Israeli intelligence officers.
Used in early stages of Gaza 2023–2024 campaign; generated ~37,000 target recommendations per report
