Strix (Swedish-Norwegian Loitering Munition)

SE — Saab / Sweden-Norway
Autonomous Drone
DEPLOYED
1993

Description

Autonomous top-attack anti-armor munition with infrared seeker for fire-and-forget engagement. Launched by 120mm mortar and autonomously tracks and attacks armored targets.

Strix was one of the first precision top-attack anti-armor munitions to enter service, preceding the widespread adoption of similar technology by other nations by over a decade. The mortar-launched configuration gives it a tactical advantage over missile-launched equivalents in that the firing platform is a standard 120mm mortar already organic to mechanized infantry units. Sweden and Norway have continued to fund AI seeker modernization programs to maintain Strix's effectiveness against the latest generation of reactive armor.

Notable Use

In service Swedish and Norwegian armies; continued modernization with AI seeker upgrades
