Harpy

Autonomous Drone
DEPLOYED
1997

Description

Fully autonomous anti-radiation drone that loiters over the battlefield and autonomously attacks radar emitters. One of the earliest operational LAWs in service.

The Harpy is considered one of the earliest true lethal autonomous weapon systems to enter operational service, as it requires no human input once launched to identify and engage radar targets. Its combination of passive anti-radiation homing and loitering endurance makes it a persistent threat that forces adversary radar operators to choose between activating their systems and risking destruction. India, South Korea, and Turkey have all operated versions of the Harpy, making it one of the most widely exported autonomous weapons in history.

Notable Use

Operated by India, South Korea, Turkey; used in multiple Middle East conflicts
