Description

Program converting existing vessels to autonomous operation using AI navigation, sensor fusion, and mission management. Demonstrates unmanned surface vessel teaming concepts.

Ghost Fleet Overlord converted two 60-meter commercial vessels into autonomous warships at a fraction of the cost of purpose-built naval platforms, demonstrating the potential for rapid autonomous fleet expansion in wartime. The program successfully demonstrated persistent autonomous operations in the Fifth Fleet operational area, validating AI sensor fusion and decision-making in real-world maritime environments with civilian traffic. The lessons learned are being applied to the development of purpose-built autonomous surface combatants under the Navy's Large Unmanned Surface Vessel program.

Notable Use

Completed autonomous Hawaii-to-San Diego transit 2020; delivered to USN 5th Fleet for operational experimentation
